Running for Vice President Student Advocacy (VPSA)

Outline your relevant experience for this position

If experience is a bank, then money is knowledge” Currently, I am UWSA’s Board of Governors Representative and SAHSS’s VP Student Outreach. I am a voting member of both the Finance and advocacy committee in the UWSA. I am a member of the Indian Student Association, Political Science Association, the MMA club and the Board of Governors. Formerly, I was the First Year Representative for the UWSA, the Youth Administrative manager for Low Entropy and Program Facilitator for Youth Empowering Youth. In my highschool, I was part of the Student Government, Youth Action Committee, Mentorship, Grad council, and the Chief Operating Officer of the French Enhancement Centre. I had volunteered in the UBC Geering Up’ Engineering Outreach program and a summer camp. I also worked as a Brand Ambassador for a Marketing Agency.

What specific initiatives and projects would you undertake related to this role?

Upon being elected as the VP Student Advocacy, my top priority would be strengthening the basics of this role and ensuring a safe and productive environment in the University of Windsor. I plan on hosting workshops and events which educate about mental and physical health and foster a sense of community. My vow is to treat everyone equally, especially for advocacy commitments, and pursue justice regardless of an individual’s ethnicity, religion, gender, relationship with me, and other biases. UWSA services like Womxn’s Centre, Campus Food Pantry, Walksafe, Peer Support Center, Afrofest and Campus Pride Center fall under my supervision, to which I strategize to promote and make it accessible for everyone to make use of their services.

I plan on working closely with students, Campus police, faculties and administration, to continue upgrading my insights on issues that would need to be solved. I would like to focus on the overall development of students, just like, it only takes one flower to bloom a garden, similarly, an individual’s growth also leads to growth of the community. Moreover, I would like to reintroduce the installation of a ‘complaint box’, which collects concerns, complaints, advice and messages from the students, for reasons they wish to share anonymously. I desire to collaborate with other fellow UWSA execs and the university administration to lower meal prices in the CAW marketplace. I would promote diverse events and cultural festivals. Being an advocate for students means having the will to listen, understand and take measures to solve the issues that may arise. I strive for a community that interacts well within itself, as such groups tend to support, help and watch over its members.

How do you plan on facilitating positive work relationships within the UWSA Board, members at large and UWindsor administration?

I plan on facilitating positive work relationships with the UWSA team by communicating regularly in regards to the progress and involvement of my initiatives and projects while maintaining law and order. One of my duties is to engage with the UWindsor Administration, specifically the staff that handles academic matters. Throughout my experiences, I have learned that it is vital for a teammate to have good listening and communication skills. My mentor had taught me that the ideal of a leader should be to carry the whole team together. These lessons will help me maintain positive relationships with my team and the UWindsor administration. Regular interaction with the UWSA Board, members at large and UWindsor administration will help me understand, inform and form comradery with them. “Only a well connected team yields efficient and fruitful results.” – anonymous

Describe the importance of the UWSA in your own words

UWSA is the student government body of University of Windsor. It is necessary for UWSA to exist in order to represent students’ voices and provide services to students to enhance their experience in the university. They provide student jobs and campus services, which is very beneficial for students. UWSA also runs social justice campaigns which are important to build values and learn how to make a difference in the society. Psychologically, it is necessary for UWSA to exist in the university so the students do not feel that they are being governed by only adults, and having a student government provides a hint of independence.

The 2024 General Elections provide an opportunity to be the advocate and the voice of students in the form of the position of Vice President Student Advocacy. My ideals choose to benefit the community and my 2 years of experience in the UWSA helps me identify and improve areas that need more work on. My aim is to provide a safe, productive and healthy environment in which student’s needs are listened to, and engineered upon. I believe the position of VP Student Advocacy provides such an opportunity to serve and advocate for students.

An important thing to consider is that I am simply handling the duties of the VP Student Advocacy, which I prioritise above all else. I find it unwelcoming to get comfortable with the position and ignore my commitments towards the community after winning the election.
