UWSA – University of Windsor Students' Alliance

Vivian Azouz

Running for Vice President Student Advocacy (VPSA)

Outline your relevant experience for this position

Currently being a board member has given me the experience to know what the role of VP student advocacy entails, I have seen firsthand what the person doing the job has to take on and I believe with my previous experience in my work life and school life that I can take on the role. I have worked with a team to build positive working environments at my two previous jobs at a physio clinic and a doctors office which has given me first-hand experience with advocating for coworkers and training junior staff which I think gives me a different perspective that I can apply to the role of VP student advocacy.  Being a part of a few clubs on campus, I have seen how the ins and outs of an organization like the UWSA would work and what I would have to undertake to be successful in the role.

What specific initiatives and projects would you undertake related to this role?

An initiative that I have been very passionate about is bringing more cultural awareness to the university campus. This year I have been a part of the Palestinian Solidarity Group as well as co-founded the club MESA which has helped me realize what kind of advocacy I would like to do in this role. I would like to implement more meetings one-on-one with the representatives of all the different cultural groups on campus so I can listen to the students for the change they want to see. Another initiative that I have been passionate about is implementing ASL into the university campus, the university used to have ASL classes and I would like to work on bringing those back to help bring awareness to the deaf community on campus. Lastly, I want to make the UWSA more accessible and recognizable so that students who want their voices heard are comfortable enough to share it.

How do you plan on facilitating positive work relationships within the UWSA Board, members at large and UWindsor administration?

I intend to be approachable, letting my personality shine through in my work and my relationships, to stay organized with my tasks, and prioritizing my attendance and presence in conversations with other board members, and Uwindsor administration. I believe that developing personal connections is essential, so I will make an effort to be there for members of the board and help out in any way I can and members with their assignments so that UWSA as a whole is prepared to assist our campus community. When dealing with others, I’ll make an effort to do my very best so that we may develop a positive working relationship

Describe the importance of the UWSA in your own words

The UWSA gives students a sense of support and community, a platform for activism and advocacy, and an opportunity to work together on initiatives that improve the campus community. It also contributes to the development of leadership skills, networking opportunities, and the provision of tools and resources to support students in their academic and professional goals.
