First Generation Project Windsor

“First Generation Project Windsor has a mandate to have a group of high achieving and determined senior year students comprised of people from different academic disciplines, cultures, races, genders, and linguistic backgrounds to be mentors to youth in the local community who are also first generation Canadians to pursue post-secondary education.

As most of the group consists of first generation Canadians we understand the trials and tribulations most of these people faced before coming to Canada, so many aren’t too familiar with how things operate in terms of post-secondary school. There is an assumption that they might be too poor, unqualified, and lack ”“Canadian experience””.

Thus through us, we strive to educate not only the youth, but most importantly their parents, on how accessible post-secondary education is, the necessity of it in the forever changing labour market, and the difference understanding things at this level will change their lives.

Our objectives include and are not limited to, running seminars with parents and youth, teaching them how OSAP works, secondary school grades needed to attend post-secondary, financial assistance options available other than OSAP, on how post-secondary educational institutions operate, how to join extracurriculars such as varsity teams, clubs, and much more. We will also be mentors to these young people, and keeping in touch with them on a weekly basis, while logging their progression towards achieving their goals to attain a post secondary education. This initiative serves a dual latent purpose as it will let the local youth embrace our local educational post-secondary institutions, while keeping this knowledge capital and labour in Windsor as the local economy restructures itself

Physics Club

Here at the University of Windsor, our Physics Club has become a great place for many of our students. Students get together to promote interest in physics, to help each other through their studies, and to socialize outside of the classroom setting. Students have their own room, with couches, books, microwave and fridge (!) and it is a great place to hang out between classes – you never know who may be in there to help you out.

The Physics Club has three main areas of activity: Academic, Recruitment and Social.

Graduate and undergraduate students have been an integral part of setting up, and the continued development of the Physics programs. Club members work directly with Faculty to provide feedback and solve problems, and make the programs the best they can be for future students.

Recently, Physics Club members have begun a unique initiative in giving presentations at local high school Physics classes. University students communicating enthusiastically to potential students about further education in general, degree courses and academic choices has proved to be a real ‘hit’ with School Teachers and students alike. The Physics Club is very active in ‘on campus’ events too.

Students like to have fun! “Work hard, Play hard”, as they say. The Physics Club has organised a variety of activities, including: parties, eating out, football games (‘The Einstein Cup’), a camp out, watching movies, playing video and card games – not to mention enjoying the food at Departmental Luncheons!

Speak Up

Poverty, War, Corruption and Human Rights Violations are just some of the issues in our global community that cause others to suffer immensely. Sometimes the problems of the world seem overwhelming. But how can we help? We’re just simple students from Canada with little say. That is where we are wrong however. We may be simple students, but we have the political freedom to act and be a voice for those without one.
As a group we are able to create awareness, inspire involvement and make change. It is fair to say that we cannot change the entire world, but we can change individual worlds one at a time. By working together in solidarity for solidarity we hope to make a positive difference in the lives of those who would otherwise succumb to the injustice of their situation. We plan to make this difference by raising awareness and raising money for established humanitarian projects through fun and exciting events.
Speak Up is a club of socially conscientious individuals from the University of Windsor who are interested in trying to promote justice, especially for the marginalized in our global society. Do not be ignorant towards problems of the world just because they are not happening to you.

The more hands there are to carry the burdens of the world the lighter they will be.

Word of Life

Word of Life is a Christian youth group designed for personal development in the Excellency of Jesus Christ. The Holy Bible forms the basis of all that is learned and taught during youth group meetings. It also forms the premise for behavior, conduct, and attitudes. It is this factor that overrides differences and creates unity. The heart of this ministry is The Holy Bible, and as such, there are aids and guidelines provided to understand and comprehend the depths of the most popular, most sold book of all time.

There are weekly meetings held to discuss the content of the Bible, especially geared towards whatever members in the group have been reading during the past week. There will be events or venues to provide an opportunity to have fun and fellowship amongst one another, such as bowling and movie nights. There will also be a more spiritual avenue, whereby we gather together and worship and praise God, as young children of God. Perhaps the most important thing about Word of Life is its authenticity and genuine people who strive to show you the love of Jesus Christ through their conduct. If you are broken, badgered, hurt, torn, betrayed, hated, frustrated, confused, lost, and/or wounded, the world does not have a place for you, but this Jesus-believing Word of Life youth group does. Come just as you are, and have your real-life questions answered by a real-life God who cares.
